Freedom, Ca

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Barney Winter, 91, on June 12, 2026, at his cherished home in Freedom, California. Born on February 13, 1935, in Watsonville, CA., Barney was a beacon of warmth and kindness, a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.

Barney was the treasured son of the late Dee Dallas and Mozelle Winter. He spent his formative years in Watsonville, graduating from Watsonville High School in 1953. From a young age, Barney understood the value of hard work and community, principles that guided him throughout his life.

In February of 1963, Barney married the love of his life, Kathryn Ann Winter (Kesovia), a union that became the cornerstone of his life until her passing. Together, they built a family rooted in love and mutual respect, raising three wonderful children: Tony Winter, Michael and Monica Winter and Sheryl Winter. Barney’s legacy is carried forward by his devoted children, as well as his three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.

Barney’s career as a local butcher spanned more than 45 remarkable years, beginning at Heights Market, continuing at Miller’s Meats, and concluding with his retirement from Deluxe Foods of Aptos. Known for his friendly demeanor and exceptional skill, Barney was more than just a butcher—he was a trusted friend to his customers and colleagues. He was always ready with a warm smile, expert recommendations on the finest cuts of meat, and a great story to share, making every visit memorable.

Outside of his professional life, Barney was an avid fisherman and golfer. He found great joy and relaxation on the open water and the golf course. He loved taking his family camping and fishing from his bass boat. After a good rain, he would take his children clamming on the beautiful beaches of Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. He enjoyed dancing around the house to his favorite Willie Nelson songs. Many of his fondest memories were made on fishing trips and golf outings, where laughter, storytelling, and camaraderie were always abundant. Barney was also known for making the best homemade corn dogs and always made sure the family table was filled with the finest cuts of meat, fresh poultry, and seafood for family and friends to enjoy.

Barney is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Dee Dallas and Mozelle Winter, and his dear wife, Kathryn. He leaves behind a legacy of love and integrity, cherished by his surviving family who will continue to honor his memories in their lives.

A celebration of Barney’s life will take place on July 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ave Maria Memorial Chapel, located at 609 Main Street, Watsonville, CA, 95076. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose life was a testament to love, dedication, and community.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing, in Barney’s honor, as a way of continuing his legacy of generosity and compassion.

Barney Winter will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as his gentle spirit and the love he shared with all who knew him will remain in our hearts forever.
