In Loving Memory of May Lay Fu (1939–2026)
May Lay Fu, a pioneering scientist and beloved resident of Watsonville, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, at the age of 86. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, James Fu, and her older sister, Lang Ti, who preceded her in death.
Born on August 18, 1939, to Ho June Fan and Yun Chin Lon, May was a woman of extraordinary intellect and passion. After earning her PhD in Biochemistry, she channeled her expertise into the delicate world of botany. In 1978, she founded May’s Orchid Laboratory in Watsonville, where she became a well known specialist in orchid tissue culture. Her work was a testament to her patience and precision, and she remained a proud member of the Santa Cruz Orchid Society.
Beyond the laboratory, May’s heart belonged to her family and her cats. She was a woman of quiet strength and brilliant mind who found beauty in the smallest details of life.
She is survived by her daughter, Irene Fu Khor; her sister Lina Lou; and her cherished grandchild.
Service Information: Family and friends are invited to honor May’s life on February 21, 2026, at Ave Maria Memorial Chapel.
In honor of May’s lifelong love for her feline companions, donations may be made to the Santa Cruz SPCA.
