Melvin W. Watts, of Watsonville passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on August 5, 1941, at Stanford Hospital to Willard and Violet Watts of Alameda. When Mel was three years old, his family moved to Watsonville where he spent the remainder of his life.
Mel was known for his kindness, gentle nature, and unwavering loyalty to his family and friends. He graduated from Watsonville High School in 1959 and soon after enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served and excelled as a member of the Army Rifle Team.
For many years, Mel worked for Laura Scudders Chips as a salesman and route driver, a career that suited his steady demeanor and love of the open road. He especially enjoyed the years he spent driving a semi-truck for his friend Mike Corbin, selling Corbin motorcycle seats at rallies across the country. Those trips combined his love of travel with his gift for connection with people from all walks of life.
Mel loved motorcycles. Once a week, his friends gathered at his home for their weekly lunch ride, a tradition that brought him great joy. One of Mel’s fondest memories was his trip to China with another of his close friends, Dan Johnson an adventure he spoke of with a smile.
Mel is survived by his partner of many years, Nancy Doering-Buoy; her daughters, Cindy Trobaugh (Jason) and Suzanne Madden (Victor); and granddaughter, Abbey Madden. He is also survived by his daughter, Juliane Watts; grandsons, Josh, Jake and Joey; his brothers, Robert and Steve Watts; and stepchildren, Nora Oliveria, Kurt Turley and Janet Thomas.
Mel was predeceased by his wife Corrine Watts; his son, Jeffrey Watts; and his sister, Sharon Chandler.
Per Mel’s wish there will be no service. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
