Eric Valor

April 29, 1968 — April 29, 2019

Eric Valor passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 from complications associated with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).  He was 51 years old.

Eric was born in Mountain View, California to Norman H. Valor and Joan D. Valor.  He grew up in Florida and California and traveled the world while his father was in the US Air Force.

Eric had an adventurous curiosity at an early age and displayed a propensity for finding ways around difficult situations.  At age 12, he began teaching himself to use an IBM processor, which led to his life with computers.  His final position prior to contracting ALS was as the IT Manager of Mercedes Benz Research & Development in Palo Alto, California.  This was the job of his dreams.

Eric was an avid athlete—a surfer, scuba diver, sailor, and strong swimmer.  He was also a black diamond-run skier and snowboarder.  He was a creative chef who shared his elaborate recipes with friends and family.

After his diagnosis with ALS, Eric began working with doctors to obtain a better understanding of the disease.  He created a website to provide detailed information and outreach to those with ALS and their families (www.ericvalor.org). He also participated in studies with experts worldwide.

Eric was preceded in death by his father, Norman H. Valor.  He is survived by his mother, Joan D. Valor-Butler, his brother, Scott H. Valor and his step-father, Floyd R. Butler.  He is also survived by numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A celebration of Eric’s life will be held on May 2, 2020.   Donations in Eric’s memory may be made to two ALS research and advocacy organizations favored by Eric: Team Gleason, 3525 Bienville St, New Orleans LA 70119 or ALS/TDI, 300 Technology Square, Ste. 400, Cambridge, MA 02139.
