Sylvia Juaregui Ashmore

July 27, 1941 — March 4, 2020

Sylvia Francisca Jauregui Ware Ashmore began life in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico; the oldest of three girls. Their father abandoned them as toddlers and they grew up under the grace and guidance of their mother, Hilda and her Tita Chonita. Hilda always sewed outfits that kept Sylvia fashionable and accentuated her beauty. Sylvia went to work for El Seguro Social as soon as she could and became a secretary. She was able in time to buy a small house for them all to live in. She was very proud of the “cuevita.” She always loved languages and had a facility with them. She studied French and English. It is in an English class that she met her husband Winthrop Horace Ware. They promptly had their first two children, Sylvie and Winthrop Jr in Guadalajara. The third, and fourth children, David and Suzanne, were born in east LA.

While her husband completed his medical training, Sylvia kept house and raised her four children with an incredible love and devotion. She would send money to her mother in Mexico . She and Winthrop later divorced and Sylvia got work as a teacher’s aide and translator. She then met Douglas Ashmore, whom she later married. Together they raised the kids. Douglas worked to support the family and unfortunately Sylvia could no longer work. Besides the usual issues with raising her family, her two sons became seriously ill with bipolar disorder and needed intensive attention. When her eldest daughter Sylvie moved to Texas, she and her son David moved there as well to be nearby. Ultimately various stresses caused her to move back to California with her daughter Suzanne. She always said that for her, the most important accomplishment of her life were her children. She suffered from poor health in later life and after a hip fracture and replacement was left greatly disabled.

Despite this she maintained a cheery attitude enjoying music and classic movies. She is survived by her daughters Sylvie and Suzanne and her son David. Her son Ivan preceded her to heaven. We know that she is with God and all the loved ones she missed so much. We love her and will keep missing her but are grateful she is no longer in pain and is whole again.
